“Jewels”, a landmark three-part ballet, was created by George Balanchine in 1967 for the New York City Ballet. The work considers color, music, classical technique, and style. Part I is Emeralds with music by Fauré, French romantic style and green costumes. Part II is Rubies with music by Stravinsky, an American jazz mood and costumes are red. Part III is Diamonds with music by Tchaikovsky, Russian classical style and shimmery white costumes. The Mariinsky dancers bring weight and grandeur.
