Beethoven was deeply depressed when he realized his hearing loss was probably irreversible. In 1802 he wrote a private letter to his brothers where he poured out his despair, even admitting thoughts of ending his life. Instead, he decided to live for his art, which makes the cheerfulness of this Symphony remarkable. This energizing composition bursts with wit, especially in the scherzo and finale. Lacking the heavy drama of later works, this overlooked gem radiates resilience and defiant joy.
