Stravinsky died in 1971, the same year Maurice Bejart premiered this minimalist ballet, so he never saw it. Bejart’s minimalist staging pulses with raw elemental force and expresses a ritual of sweat, sacrifice, and ecstatic renewal. Stripped of narrative, the ballet evokes ancient rites of nature and communal transformation. The dancers collide in tribal rhythm evoking the wild energy of ancient ceremonies. Stravinsky valued precision and discipline in dance, might have admired this performance.
