Brooding, complex, and quietly revolutionary, this is Mozart at his most introspective and searching. The orchestra speaks in shadowed tones, in a world of tension and ambiguity. When the piano enters, it doesn’t resolve the darkness. Threading intricate lines through the orchestral fabric, the piano is unsettled and probing. The slow movement offers a fragile kind of light. Then comes the finale: a set of variations that continually shifts mood before returning to the concerto’s darker core.
