Petrenko’s Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall captures the emotional vastness of Mahler’s world, from the funeral-march gravity of the opening trumpet call to the famous Adagietto and the triumphant sweep of the finale. Liverpool is one of Britain’s great musical cities, home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, one of England's oldest continuing professional symphony orchestras. Petrenko draws on that, perhaps the hall itself is helping the symphony breathe.
