Although Hansel and Gretel is often regarded as a “children’s opera”, this production appeals to younger audiences and adult opera-lovers. The fantasy elements with forest, candy and the iconic witch are handled with charm, yet the musical and dramatic seriousness aren't lost. The children’s chorus work, the interplay of voices (parents, children, witch) and the overall vocal casting are terrific. Imaginative stage direction by Katharina Thalbach and set/costume design by Ezio Toffolutti.
