In Episode 1 we meet a 21-year-old Mozart as he leaves behind his secure job in Salzburg to chase freedom and fulfillment. He travels to Mannheim, the musical cutting-edge of Europe, and then on to Paris, seeking recognition. Success in Paris is cut short by the sudden death of his mother, which shatters him but his father, Leopold. remains unsympathetic. This first step marks Mozart’s journey from prodigy to independent artist.
