This second movement is the only one marked “mesto” (meaning "sad") in all 32 of Beethoven's sonatas! It's deeply expressive, almost tragic. Most Classical-era sonatas had three movements, but this one has four: Allegro, Largo e mesto, Menuetto, and Rondo. From bright optimism to somber introspection, this sonata showcases Beethoven’s growing ability to tell a full emotional story through purely instrumental music.
